Building built-in shelves properly starts with measuring the space in more than one spot, because walls in older Toronto homes taper and floors slope. Alcove shelving gets scribed to the walls so there are no wandering gaps, fixed to studs or masonry behind the plaster, and sized to what it will hold — a shelf of paperbacks and a shelf of vinyl records need very different spans and thicknesses to stay straight. Garage shelving is a different discipline: heavy-duty brackets or 2x4 framing rated for bins of tools and tires, anchored into studs or block, with clearance planned around the car doors, not discovered by them. Everything gets filled, sanded and finished so a bookcase built-in reads as part of the house.
