The smart thermostat itself is the easy part — the wall behind it is where installs go sideways. Homeowners open the old thermostat to find four unlabeled wires, no C-wire, or a 60-year-old two-wire loop from the original furnace, and the sleek app setup screen has no answer for any of it. Meanwhile the furnace is off and it is February.

A proper smart thermostat installation starts with identifying what your heating system actually is: forced-air gas furnace, furnace plus air conditioning, heat pump, or a boiler with radiators — each wires differently. We photograph and label the existing wiring before anything comes off the wall, check for a C-wire (the common wire that powers the thermostat's screen and radio), and where there is none, use the power-adapter kit that ships with an ecobee installation or the equivalent for a Nest thermostat installation rather than leaving it to steal power and brown out the furnace board. The old plate's paint shadow gets covered with a trim plate or filled and touched up, the wifi thermostat gets connected to your network, and heating and cooling are both test-run before we leave.

• Wall finish — a small modern thermostat replacing a large old rectangle usually means patching and touch-up paint
