Common questions

Is a handyman allowed to repair a toilet in Ontario, or does it need a plumber?
Tank repairs — flappers, fill valves, flush valves, handles, supply lines — are minor work, and swapping a fixture like-for-like is too. Where Ontario draws the line is altering the plumbing: changing drain pipes, moving the toilet, or reworking supply rough-ins requires a licensed plumber. If your repair turns out to need that, we stop and bring one in rather than working past our lane. You'll know before anything happens.
Why does my toilet run for a few seconds every hour or two?
That's a phantom flush — water seeping past a worn flapper until the level drops enough for the fill valve to top the tank up. It wastes a surprising amount of water. The fix is a matched flapper (they're not all interchangeable) and sometimes a cleanup of the valve seat it seals against. It's one of the quickest, highest-payback repairs we do.
My toilet flushes weakly even though nothing is clogged. Can that improve?
Usually, yes. The common causes are a low tank water level, scale-clogged rim jets around the bowl edge, or a flapper closing too early. We check all three in order. In hard-water areas of the GTA, jet cleaning alone often restores a flush people thought was gone for good. If the toilet is an early low-flow model that never flushed well, we'll say so honestly — that's a replacement conversation, not a repair.
There's water on the floor around the toilet. Is that an emergency?
Treat it seriously until diagnosed. Condensation on a cold tank is harmless; a leaking supply line or tank bolt is fixable the same visit; water wicking from under the base suggests the wax seal has failed, which means lifting the toilet and resealing — a job we handle under our toilet installation service. Should I repair an old toilet or just replace it?
If the porcelain is sound, repair wins — a full tank rebuild costs a fraction of a new toilet installed. Replacement makes sense when the bowl is cracked, the toilet is an early 1990s first-generation low-flow that clogs constantly, or repair parts no longer exist for it.
