One cracked tile rarely stays one cracked tile. A crack in a floor tile usually means something moved underneath — a flexing subfloor, a missing patch of thinset, a control joint that was tiled over — and until that's understood, the neighbouring tiles are next. In showers, chipped tile repair is about more than looks: a crack or a hollow, drummy tile is an opening for water to reach the wall behind, and that's where the expensive damage happens. Toronto homes give us every version of it: cracked ceramic in 1950s bungalow bathrooms set on a thick mortar bed, loose porcelain in newer condo showers, and hairline cracks in basement floors laid straight onto concrete.

A proper repair starts with rakeing out the grout around the damaged tile so its neighbours are protected, then breaking out the tile from the centre with care, scraping the old adhesive back to a flat base, and checking what's underneath. The new tile goes in on fresh thinset, gets levelled flush with the surrounding surface, and is grouted to match once the adhesive cures. The traps are prying tiles out sideways (which chips the adjacent edges), reusing crumbly old adhesive as a base, and grouting the same day so the tile settles low. Matching grout colour honestly takes trial — aged grout is never the colour on the label.
