An accent wall is the project that looks simple on a saved photo and turns out to be all layout math. A proper feature wall installation starts on paper: measuring the wall, deciding the batten or slat spacing so the pattern lands symmetrically and dies cleanly into corners, outlets and windows, then snapping level and plumb lines rather than trusting the ceiling or floor to be straight. Battens and rails get fastened into studs or with adhesive plus pins on masonry-backed walls; shiplap runs get started dead level because every course inherits the first one's error; slat walls get consistent gaps off spacers, not eyeballing. Outlet boxes get extended where the wall thickness grows. Then filling, caulking and paint — panel moulding walls in particular are 40 percent carpentry and 60 percent finishing.
