Laminate installation looks friendly on the box — click flooring, no glue, done in a weekend. The reality in most GTA homes is that the floor underneath is the problem: humps and dips beyond a few millimetres make a floating floor click apart, bounce, and gap at the joints. The boards are the easy part; the floor they sit on decides whether the job succeeds.

A proper install runs in a fixed order. The laminate acclimatizes in the room for a couple of days so it's done expanding before it's locked together. The old flooring comes up, the subfloor gets flattened and cleaned, underlayment goes down (with a vapour layer over concrete), and then the boards are laid with staggered joints, a consistent expansion gap at every wall and fixed object, and end boards no shorter than a hand's width. Door casings get undercut so boards slide beneath them instead of being scribed around — the detail that most visibly separates careful work from rushed work. Transitions and trim finish the floor; a floating floor installation without expansion gaps will buckle in its first humid summer.
