Shelves are the job people try themselves first. The result is usually one of three things: a shelf that slopes just enough to notice, anchors that let go the first time real books land on it, or a wall full of test holes from hunting for a stud. Shelf mounting looks simple, and that's exactly why it goes wrong — the loads are bigger than they seem and drywall alone holds far less than the anchor packaging implies.

Putting up shelves properly starts with what's going on them. A display shelf for photos and a shelf for cookbooks or vinyl need different fixings. Floating shelves are the fussiest: the hidden bracket has to be dead level and bolted into studs or solid masonry, because there are no visible brackets sharing the load. On the plaster walls in older Toronto houses, we drill pilot holes to avoid cracking; on condo concrete, it's a hammer drill and sleeve anchors. Every run of shelving installation gets checked with a level along the run, not just per shelf, because your eye reads the whole wall.
