Small tiling jobs are where a good tile setter earns their keep. A bathroom floor tile job or an entryway tile area is compact enough that renovation contractors don't want it, but technical enough that it punishes shortcuts — a floor tiled over a bouncy subfloor cracks its grout within a season, and an entry laid without planning ends with sliver cuts at the front door where everyone looks.

Order of work is everything in tiling. The substrate comes first: the floor gets checked for flatness and stiffness, and gets levelling compound or backer board before any tile is set — most tile failures are really substrate failures. Then dry layout to centre the pattern and push cuts to the walls, thinset combed at the right notch for the tile size, tiles set with levelling clips on the larger formats, and grout only after the bed has cured. Wet areas like a laundry room tile floor deserve a waterproofing layer, and every room needs a movement gap at its edges hidden under the baseboard — tile fitted tight to walls has nowhere to go and tents when the house moves.
