Curtain rods fail in slow motion. They get installed into drywall anchors above a window, hold fine for a month, then start to droop the first time someone yanks a curtain closed or a kid swings on the fabric. Above most windows there's a solid wood header to screw into — the trick of good curtain installation is finding it and using it.

Proper drapery hardware installation starts with layout: rods typically mount 10 to 15 centimetres above the window frame and extend 15 to 25 centimetres past each side, which makes windows look larger and lets curtains stack clear of the glass. Long rods get a centre bracket so they don't bow. A curtain track installation on the ceiling — the clean, hotel-style look — means finding joists or using rated toggles across the span. Blackout setups need brackets tight to the wall with wraparound returns, or the light leak defeats the fabric. And in concrete-ceiling condos, every fixing is a drilled anchor, so we measure the whole run before making the first hole.

Common questions

Why did my old curtain rod pull out of the wall?
Almost always because the brackets were in plain drywall anchors carrying a repeated sideways tug — the worst load for an anchor. Curtains get pulled daily, so fixings need to be in the wood header above the window, in studs, or in toggle-style anchors rated for the job. We reuse your existing rod if it's sound, fix the pulled-out holes, and remount into something that holds.
How high and how wide should curtain rods be mounted?
The standard that flatters most rooms: 10 to 15 centimetres above the frame — or halfway to the ceiling in rooms under 2.6 metres — and 15 to 25 centimetres past the frame on each side. Higher and wider makes windows look bigger and lets the fabric stack off the glass for more daylight. Floor-length curtains should just kiss the floor; we measure drop per window rather than assuming your floors are level.
Can you install curtain rods in a condo with concrete walls and ceilings?
Yes — it's one of our most common requests to hang curtains in Toronto. Concrete needs a hammer drill and masonry anchors at every bracket, so the job takes longer than in a house, but the result is stronger. Some window walls have a metal-stud furring layer over the concrete, which changes the fastener choice; a photo of the window top usually tells us what we're dealing with.
Do blackout curtains really need special installation?
The fabric only works if light can't sneak around it. That means brackets that hold the rod close to the wall, wraparound ends so the curtain returns to the wall at each side, generous width past the frame, and ideally a rod or track above the frame rather than inside it.
